Where to See Autumn Colours in and Around Segovia
Where to See Autumn Colours in and Around Segovia
From the banks of the Eresma to the pine woods of Valsaín, here is where the leaves turn, when to go, and which side of the city to book a room on.
The Eresma riverbank and the Alcázar woods
The walk along the Eresma from the Puerta de San Andrés down to the Alcázar is the closest autumn colour to the city centre, and it is free. Poplars, ash and plane trees line the water, turning from mid-October, with the best show usually in the first three weeks of November. Start at the Puerta de San Andrés and follow the path past the Casa de la Moneda; the stretch below the Alcázar, where the river bends under the tower, is the most photographed. Allow 45 minutes one way. The path is uneven in places, so wear shoes with grip.
This is the walk I would book a hotel for: stay anywhere inside the old city and you can be on the riverbank in ten minutes on foot. Hotels around the Plaza Mayor and the Calle Real are convenient for both the river and the aqueduct. Prices in November are typically lower than in October, when the city fills at weekends. If you want the river at its quietest, go on a weekday morning before 10am, when the mist often sits on the water below the Alcázar.
Valsaín and the Sierra de Guadarrama
The pine woods of Valsaín, about 15km south of Segovia, are the big autumn set piece: Scots pine mixed with oak and maple, and the Puerto de Navacerrada road gives you high views without a long hike. Drive time from Segovia is 20–25 minutes on the CL-601. The classic loop is the Senda de los Pinares, a waymarked path from the Centro de Interpretación de Boca del Asno. October is best for the first colour; by early November the high ground can be bare. Bring a jacket: it is 300–400m higher than Segovia and noticeably colder.
There is no hotel in Valsaín itself worth planning around, so use Segovia as your base and drive out for the day. If you are without a car, the bus from Segovia to La Granja stops near the Valsaín turn, but services are limited and the walk to the woods adds an hour each way. For most travellers, a hire car for one day is the practical choice. Skip the Puerto de Navacerrada at weekends in October: the car park fills by 10am and the pass gets crowded with day-trippers from Madrid.
Parque del Cementerio and the city parks
If you have less time, the Parque del Cementerio on the Carretera de Ávila is a local secret for autumn colour: a slope of deciduous trees above the cemetery with views back to the aqueduct. It is a 15-minute walk from the Plaza del Azoguejo, free, and quiet on weekday afternoons. The Alameda del Parral, below the Parral monastery, is another good short stop on the Eresma path, with poplars and willows that turn late, often into the last week of November.
These are not destinations in themselves, but they are the best options if you are in Segovia for a single day and cannot leave the city. Pair the Parque del Cementerio with a walk down to the aqueduct, or the Alameda del Parral with a visit to the monastery. Neither needs more than half an hour. I would skip the city's smaller squares for autumn colour: the plane trees around the Plaza Mayor turn late and are often pruned hard, so the effect is modest.
Practical timing and where to stay
Autumn colour in Segovia runs from mid-October to late November, with the riverbank peaking in early November and Valsaín a week or two earlier. Weekends in October are busy with Madrid day-trippers, so book a hotel inside the old city and plan the river walk for a weekday. The city is compact: from the aqueduct to the Alcázar is a 20-minute walk, and most hotels are within that ring. Expect cooler mornings, with temperatures around 5–10°C in November, and rain possible; pack layers and an umbrella.
For the best combination of autumn colour and convenience, I would book a hotel near the Plaza Mayor or along the Calle Real, which puts the Eresma walk, the aqueduct and the Alcázar all within 15 minutes on foot. If you are driving to Valsaín, check that your hotel has parking, as street parking in the old city is restricted. Avoid the hotels on the outskirts along the N-110 if you want to walk everywhere: they are cheaper but you will spend the savings on taxis.
Before you book
The questions people ask about Segovia, answered with this month’s numbers.
Mid-October to late November. The Eresma riverbank usually peaks in the first three weeks of November; Valsaín and the higher pine woods are earlier, often best in October. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
For the city walks, no: the Eresma path and city parks are walkable from any central hotel. For Valsaín and the Sierra de Guadarrama, a car is the practical choice; public transport is limited and adds significant walking time.
Inside the old city, near the Plaza Mayor or Calle Real, puts the Eresma riverbank and the aqueduct within 15 minutes on foot. If you plan to drive to Valsaín, confirm parking with your hotel, as old-city parking is restricted.
